About OK Go

OK Go Biography

OK Go didn't gain a following until 2005, when the band started making their own music videos to promote their off-kilter guitars, Pixies/Cars fetishism, and plain power pop sensibility. Recognizing the increasing popularity of websites like as YouTube, the band created a campy dancing video for A Million Ways, a song off their sophomore album, Oh No. It became the most downloaded music video in history, and OK Go went on to win a Grammy Award for their follow-up video, which featured the bandmates dancing on treadmills, while continuing to make witty, catchy pop music. OK Go was established in the fall of 1998 by vocalist/guitarist Damian Kulash, guitarist Andrew Duncan, bassist Tim Nordwind, and drummer Dan Konopka. The other three members of OK Go had performed together in the Chicago-based band Stanley's Joyful Noise prior to Kulash's relocation from the East Coast to Chicago. OK Go quickly gained media attention in Chicago despite not having released a single album, thanks in part to their energetic live act and opening slots for heavyweights like Elliott Smith and the Promise Ring. They quickly followed up with a pair of three-song CD singles to keep fans entertained until a full-length was ready, and they also acted as the de facto house band for a touring version of NPR's This American Life. OK Go finally signed with Capitol and released their self-titled debut in September 2002, with Get Over It achieving a minor modern rock radio hit. When the band reunited in August 2005 to release Oh No, it was without guitarist Duncan, who had quit after the album's recording sessions had concluded. Andy Ross took his position as his successor, and he joined the band in making a pair of inventive, low-budget videos. The video for A Million Ways, which consisted of one long take and featured the bandmates rehearsing difficult dance routines in someone's garden, inspired many fan tributes online and helped the song become a success in Europe. The popular Here It Goes Again found OK Go dancing once more, this time on a series of moving treadmills, and the song became a Top 40 hit in the United States and the United Kingdom a few months later. OK Go won a Grammy Award for the later video, and they finally returned to the studio to record an EP, You're Not Alone, in 2008. In 2010, he released the album Of the Blue Color of the Sky, which charted in the Top 40 owing to hits like This Too Shall Pass and End Love. In promotion of the record, the band traveled extensively, doing 180 gigs in 2010. Some of the performances were taped, and the video was published the following year as 180/365, a live album mixed by Dave Fridmann, with whom OK Go would collaborate again on their fourth studio album, Hungry Ghosts, in 2014.
