Melanie Campbell Biography

Melanie Campbell is the president and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing Black voter engagement and civic participation. Growing up on the Space Coast of Florida in the 1950s, Campbell experienced racial tensions early in her childhood. Her mother, a teacher, instilled a deep passion for Black history, shaping her activism. 

She went on to an HBCU, Clark Atlanta University, in 1983, earning a B.A. in business administration. After a brief stint in corporate America, she worked for the Atlanta mayorship. In 1995, Campbell joined the NCBCP in Washington, D.C., mentored by civil rights icon Dorothy I. Height. She became executive director in 2000 and CEO a decade later. Her leadership has driven voter registration campaigns, credited with registering 200,000 voters in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 elections. 

Campbell founded the Black Women’s Roundtable, empowering Black women to address social issues, and the Black Youth Vote program, fostering young leaders. She won the National Urban League’s Women of Power Award and was named one of Essence Magazine’s “100 Woke Women” in 2017. Campbell advises U.S. presidents and speaks at events like the 2024 Democratic National Convention, championing civil rights, women’s rights, and social justice for all.
