Mary "Missy" Cummings is the head of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory at Duke University's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and the Duke Institute of Brain Sciences. Human-unmanned vehicle interaction, human-autonomous system cooperation, human-systems engineering, public-policy implications of unmanned vehicles, and the ethical and societal effect of technology are among her research interests.
From 1988 until 1999, Cummings served as a navy officer and military pilot, and she was one of the US Navy's first female fighter pilots. Her study investigates the intricate connections between human and computer decision-making in complex sociotechnical systems with embedded autonomy.
