Mary-Claire King, Ph.D., is a geneticist from the United States. She was the first to establish that breast cancer may be passed down down the generations owing to abnormalities in the BRCA1 gene. She specializes in human genetics, with a focus on genetic heterogeneity and complex characteristics. She investigates how genetics and environment combine to cause diseases including breast and ovarian cancer, hereditary deafness, schizophrenia, HIV, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis in humans. Since 1995, she has served as the American Cancer Society Professor of Genome Sciences and Medical Genetics in the University of Washington's Department of Medicine. King is most recognized for discovering breast cancer genes, but she is also known for proving that humans and chimps are 99 percent genetically similar and for using genome sequencing to identify victims of human rights violations. She began working in Argentina in 1984 to find children who had been kidnapped from their families and unlawfully adopted during the Dirty War (1976–1983) by the military dictatorship. She is the recipient of several honors, including the Lasker Award and the National Medal of Science. King was named one of the 50 most influential women in science by Discover magazine in 2002.
