Louise Leakey is the third generation of her family to exploring East Africa in search of humanity's past. In 2001, Leakey and her mother, Meave, discovered the 3.5-million-year-old Kenyanthropus platyops near Tanzania's Olduvai Gorge, the same place where her father, Richard, discovered the Turkana Boy fossil and where her grandparents, Louise and Mary Leakey, discovered the bones of Homo habilis.
Louise and Meave, both National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence, discovered fresh H. habilis bones in August 2007, which might alter humanity's evolutionary history. We assume that humans developed from apes in a linear progression from ape to hominid to human, but the Leakeys' discovery implies that several pre-human species coexisted for over half a million years.
