Louise Aronson Biography

Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, Louise Aronson is a practicing geriatrician (UCSF). She has worked as head of the Northern California Geriatrics Education Center, the UCSF Pathways to Discovery Program, and presently leads the campus-wide Health Humanities and Social Advocacy Initiative. She graduated from Harvard Medical School. California Homecare Physician of the Year, Gold Professorship in Humanism in Medicine, and American Geriatrics Society Clinician-Teacher of the Year are among the honors she has won. Her research has appeared in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, Health Affairs, Medical Education, Academic Medicine, Medical Teacher, JGIM, STAT News, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and JAMA. She is a Warren Wilson Program for Writers graduate who has written articles, essays, and short stories about the intersection between medicine and life. A History of the Present Illness, her debut novel, was a nominee for the Chautauqua Prize and the PEN America debut fiction prize. Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, and Reimagining Life, her second book, a New York Times nonfiction bestseller, was released in June 2019 to starred reviews and national media coverage. "Stunning, extraordinary," "beautiful, huge in scale," and "complex, subtle beyond nearly anything" have all been used to characterize it. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, Narrative Magazine, New England Review, Discover Magazine, and Bellevue Literary Review, among other places. She's been nominated for four Pushcart Prizes and received a MacDowell Colony fellowship. Aronson is a fifth-generation San Franciscan who was born in the same medical facility where she currently works, a fact that causes her to joke that she hasn't traveled very far in her life, having only gone down fifteen floors and across a couple of buildings. She aspired to be the next Max Perkins, the Scribner editor of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, or a professional basketball player as a youngster, but her vertical, visual, and coordination issues ruined her dreams from the start. She went into medicine as a History and Anthropology major with the goal of improving people's lives, and she was far into her profession when she realized she could be just as effective with a pen or keyboard as she could with a prescription pad and stethoscope. Her family and she reside on one of San Francisco's fourteen high hills.
