Wiig was conceived in Canandaigua New York and brought up in Lancaster Pennsylvania and Rochester New York. Wiig went to the University of Arizona where she studied Fine Art.
She later moved to Los Angeles where she broke into satire as an individual from the improvisational parody company The Groundlings and made her TV debut in 2003. Wiig joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2005 and the next year she co-featured in the Christmas satire film Unaccompanied Minors.
