The topic of his paintings, establishments, and public activities is regularly drawn from African-American mainstream culture, and is established in the geography of his childhood: "You can't be born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955 and experience childhood in South Central [Los Angeles] close to the Black Panthers base camp, and not feel like you have some sort of social obligation.

You can't move to Watts in 1963 and not talk about it. That decided a great deal of where my work planned to go," said Marshall.

A striking part of Marshall's canvases is the unequivocally dark skin tone of his figures - an advancement the craftsman says rose up out of an examination concerning the invisibility of blacks in America and the pointlessly negative implications related with darkness. The sheer magnificence of his work addresses workmanship that is officially thorough and socially engaged.

Marshall's craftsmanship is firmly identified with the Black Arts movement, an African-American-drove movement dynamic during the 1960s and 1970s that passed on a message of dark pride. Marshall dwells in Chicago, Illinois.
