Ken Wregget was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round, 45th overall, in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. Wregget had two outstanding seasons with the Western Junior Hockey League's Lethbridge Broncos. In fact, Wregget was the starting goaltender, with Ron Hextall serving as his backup. He followed that up with another 56-game season in 1987-88, but his win total fell to 12 and his goals against increased to 4.44. As the 1988-89 season came to a close, the Maple Leafs traded Wregget to the Philadelphia Flyers, who needed a front-line goaltender heading into the playoffs. Wregget spent the next two seasons in Philadelphia, but despite appearing in 51 and 30 games each season, he was never able to fully capitalise on his opportunity with the Flyers. who were looking for a front-line goaltender as the playoffs approached. Wregget spent the next two seasons in Philadelphia, but despite appearing in 51 and 30 games each season, he was never able to fully capitalise on his opportunity with the Flyers. Wregget was once again on the move at the trade deadline, this time ending up in Pittsburgh as Tom Barrasso's backup. Wregget filled in admirably for Barrasso during the playoffs, and he was instrumental in the Penguins winning their second Stanley Cup in a row. Wregget remained in Pittsburgh's net for six more seasons before joining the Calgary Flames for the 1998-99 season. In 27 games, he had the best goals against average of his career (2.53).
