Kavita Patel Biography

Kavita Patel, MD, MS, is a fellow in the Economic Studies department at the Brookings Institution and the managing director for clinical transformation and delivery at the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform. Dr. Patel works at Johns Hopkins Medicine as a primary care physician. She also worked as the director of policy for the White House's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement during the Obama administration. Dr. Patel played a significant role in policy creation and review of policy efforts related to health reform, financial regulatory reform, and economic recovery concerns as a senior adviser to Valerie Jarrett, President Obama's senior advisor. Dr. Patel has a thorough grasp of Capitol Hill because of her experience on Senator Edward Kennedy's staff. She was a policy analyst and valued assistant to the Senator as a deputy staff director on health, and she was a member of the senior staff of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee under Sen. Kennedy's leadership. She has also worked as a researcher at the RAND Corporation and as a practicing physician in both California and Oregon. She has previously served as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and will continue to work as an internal medicine practitioner while at Brookings. She graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center with a medical degree and a master's degree in public health from the University of California, Los Angeles.
