Joshua Sharfstein Biography

Doctor Joshua M. Sharfstein, MD, is the Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is in charge of the Office of Public Health Practice and Training, as well as the General Preventive Medicine Residency and major training activities, such as partnership with public health agencies. He is also a member of the Department of Health Policy and Management. Dr. Sharfstein also serves as the Director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, where he oversees the implementation of the initiative's key components. Earlier, he was the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as well as the Principal Deputy Commissioner of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Food and Drug Administration, Baltimore City Commissioner of Health, and Congressman Henry A. Waxman's health policy counselor. Sharfstein worked as the FDA's transition team leader in 2008, and President Obama appointed him as Principal Deputy Commissioner of the FDA in 2009. Sharfstein graduated from Harvard College in 1991 with a bachelor's degree. He attended Harvard Medical School and completed his pediatric residency through a joint program at Boston Children's Hospital and Boston Medical Center, as well as a special pediatrics fellowship with Boston University.
