The ailment turned out to be hydrargyrum, a disease caused by mercury or its derivatives, however, the source remains unknown. According to rumors, Piven's habit of eating fish twice a day over the past 20 years may have contributed to the elevated levels of mercury. Another possibility is that Piven's elevated mercury levels were caused by the natural medicines he was taking. Piven was jokingly quitting the play to pursue a career as a thermometer, according to Mamet. In a guest appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on September 1, 2009, Piven said that he had given up red meat and fowl for the last 20 years and had been receiving all of his nourishment from fish. In the Broadway production, Piven was replaced by William H. Macy and Norbert Leo Butz. He will appear in the CBS drama Wisdom of the Crowd in 2017.
