Jenny Shipley Biography

Dame Jenny Shipley is a non-executive director of a number of New Zealand and overseas corporations. She is the chairperson of Genesis Energy, a New Zealand government-owned SOE, and has served as an independent director of China Construction Bank, one of China's major four former state-owned banks, since 2007. Dame Shipley is a director of Momentum and the Investment, Savings and Insurance Board, and heads the New Zealand-based firms Senior Money International and Mainzeal Construction. In the 1990s, she served as a Senior Minister in the New Zealand Government, where she was instrumental in implementing changes in social welfare, health, women's affairs, transportation, state services, state-owned companies, Radio New Zealand, and accident compensation. She was a key figure in the successful decade of economic and social change, during which deficits were cut, public debt was decreased, and positive growth rates were attained. In the first New Zealand MMP parliament, Dame Shipley led a coalition and minority government from 1997 to 1999. She also led New Zealand through the Asian Crisis, returning the economy to a four percent growth rate. She led APEC in New Zealand in 1999 and left politics in New Zealand in 2002. Dame Shipley travels widely in her capacity as a director, keynote speaker, and consultant, and she is a frequent traveler to China. Strategic leadership and influencing the future are two of her main interests. She keeps watch of geopolitical, demographic, economic, and social megatrends and analyses and comments on them. Dame Shipley, who is passionate about women's leadership, rights, and governance, has lectured on these themes all over the world. She is the Vice President of the Club of Madrid, an organization of past leaders dedicated to global democracy and open economic growth. She was a founding member of the East Asia Education Forum and a member of the World Women's Leaders Council. She is a Privy Councilor, and the Queen honored her in 2002 for her contributions to the New Zealand Parliament.
