Jay Barker Biography

Jay Barker was born on July 20, 1972. He is a Birmingham radio presenter and former professional American football quarterback. Barker began his football career at Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Alabama. He received his diploma in 1990. Barker attended the University of Alabama, where he was coached by Gene Stallings. Barker led the Crimson Tide to a national title in the 1993 Sugar Bowl, defeating the #1 Miami Hurricanes 34–13 in the last game of the 1992 season. Barker was named the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner in 1994 and placed sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting. As a starting quarterback, Barker led the Crimson Tide to a 35–2–1 record; the official NCAA record book shows a 27–11 record owing to the forfeiture of games during the 1993 season. The Green Bay Packers selected Barker in the fifth round of the 1995 NFL Draft. He also played for the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers in the NFL. Barker was signed by the Toronto Argonauts in 1998, taking him to the Canadian Football League for the first time. Barker departed the Argonauts after three seasons to join the XFL's Birmingham Thunderbolts. After only one season, the XFL collapsed. Barker is presently an ESPN Radio analyst and on-air broadcaster for Birmingham's WJOX. Along with Tony Kurre, he and Al Del Greco, a former Auburn placekicker, host the Opening Drive show on WJOX.
