Janet Yellen is an economist and policymaker who served as the 78th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 2021 to 2025 under President Joe Biden. She graduated summa cum laude from Brown University and earned her Ph.D. from Yale. She is the first woman to hold that position and the first person to lead the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, and the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Yellen previously served as Chair of the Federal Reserve (2014–2018), the first woman in that role, and Vice Chair (2010–2014). Earlier, she was President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco (2004–2010), a Fed Governor (1994–1997), and Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers (1997–1999) under President Bill Clinton. A distinguished academic, she is Professor Emerita at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and has researched labor markets, monetary policy, and macroeconomic issues.  Known for her steady, data-driven approach, Yellen has shaped U.S. economic policy through crises, including the Great Recession and COVID-19 recovery.
