Jacqueline Battalora was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and spent six years in Antwerp, Belgium before moving to Victoria, Texas with her family. Her view of race in America was shaped by her experiences in high school and middle school in Texas.

She is a former Chicago Police officer who is now a lawyer and professor of sociology and criminal justice at Saint Xavier University. She has a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and has been involved in anti-racist education since the mid-1990s.
