Gina Raimondo Biography

Gina Raimondo is an American businesswoman and Democrat who served as the 40th U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Joe Biden from March 2021 to January 2025. A native of Smithfield, Rhode Island, Raimondo grew up in an Italian-American family. She went on to graduate magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in economics, earned a doctorate in sociology from Oxford, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.

She co-founded Rhode Island's first venture capital firm, Point Judith Capital while working as a law clerk. She would become the 75th Governor of Rhode Island, the first female to hold the position. Her work included pension reform, workforce development, and key infrastructure developments.

Under the Biden Administration, she focused on global economic competitiveness, advancing policies like the CHIPS and Science Act to boost U.S. semiconductor production. 

She is the wife of Andrew Moffit, with whom she shares two children.
