Gina Raimondo is an American businesswoman and Democrat who served as the 40th U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Joe Biden from March 2021 to January 2025. A native of Smithfield, Rhode Island, Raimondo grew up in an Italian-American family. She went on to graduate magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in economics, earned a doctorate in sociology from Oxford, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
She co-founded Rhode Island's first venture capital firm, Point Judith Capital while working as a law clerk. She would become the 75th Governor of Rhode Island, the first female to hold the position. Her work included pension reform, workforce development, and key infrastructure developments.
