Dutton, the child of a financial legal counselor, was conceived in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia and started playing guitar at age eight. He composed his first melody when he was in the ninth grade and started playing the harmonica in a wire rack.
Dutton credits Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr., just as the then-contemporary "old school" hip-bounce hints of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Philadelphia's own Schoolly D, as impacts. Dutton, who went to secondary school at the private Germantown Friends School, started playing solo in the city of Philadelphia.
