Emmett D. Carson, Ph.D., is a leading advocate for progressive social reform across the world. Emmett Carson is a well-known speaker who has written over 75 books on charity and social justice. Emmett Carson is the new Silicon Valley Community Foundation's first CEO and president, following the historic merger of Community Foundation Silicon Valley and Peninsula Community Foundation. The community foundation is the largest on the West Coast and one of the largest in the country, with total assets of $1.9 billion. It is devoted to increasing civic participation to address the most pressing issues confronting San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Emmett Carson formerly served as president and CEO of The Minneapolis Foundation for 12 years, during which time he pioneered numerous community programs and expanded assets from $186 million to over $600 million. Emmett Carson formerly worked as the Ford Foundation's inaugural manager of its global grantmaking program on philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. Emmett Carson has previously worked with the Congressional Research Service and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Emmett Carson earned a Ph.D. and a master's degree in public administration in public and international affairs from Princeton University, as well as a bachelor's degree in economics from Morehouse College, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa member. Emmett is married to Jacqueline Copeland-Carson, Ph.D., and they share the honor, joy, and sometimes struggle of parenting a teenage daughter together.
