Dr. Kevin Feldman Biography

Dr. Kevin Feldman is an independent educational consultant that works with publishers, schools, and districts around the country. He is the Emeritus Director of Reading and Intervention for the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE). He has worked in education for 41 years. He plans, organizes, and supervises programs relating to PreK-12 literacy and the prevention/remediation of reading issues as the Director of Reading and Intervention for SCOE. Dr. Feldman's main goal is to help students improve their academic literacy. Active student engagement, academic vocabulary, comprehension strategies, preventing early reading failure, linking assessment to instruction, developing school-wide literacy support models (e.g. RTI) for elementary, middle, and high schools, and accommodating and accelerating ELL/Special Education and other high-risk students are just a few of his major contributions. Dr. Feldman is a principal consultant on a number of RTI/Instructional improvement initiatives around the country (e.g., in Oregon, Michigan, and Nebraska), all of which are aimed at improving topic area literacy or Tier 1 instruction in grades 4 through 12. He also consults with the CalSTAT Statewide Special Education Reform Project in California (www.calstat.org), as well as a number of publishers and literacy organizations around the country. He has worked as a consultant author for a number of secondary publishers, including Prentice-Hall Middle/High School Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science Programs, and is the co-author of Scholastic's READ 180 Intervention Program. Dr. Feldman is a popular seminar speaker in California and around the United States. He's written many papers for professional publications and created reports for task groups and literacy campaigns. He and Dr. Kate Kinsella co-authored the monograph Narrowing the Language Gap: The Case for Explicit Vocabulary Instruction (2005), and he is co-editing a special issue of Learning Disabilities Research and Practice (2011) on Content Area Literacy with Dr. Ed Ellis. Dr. Feldman has taught Special Education and Masters' level programs at the University of California, Riverside, and Sonoma State University for the past nineteen years. Dr. Feldman received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Washington State University, his master's degree in special education, learning disabilities, and instructional design from UC Riverside, and his Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of San Francisco. Dr. Feldman likes reading (imagine that! ), outdoor adventuring/travel, music, and keeping up with his twenty-year-old son Max and sixteen-year-old daughter Zoe Rose when he is not working with educators.
