Denis Hayes, CEO of the Bullitt Foundation, is leading an initiative to transform the main cities of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia into sustainable examples for a rapidly urbanizing world. The Foundation uses ecological concepts to create human ecosystems that are healthy and resilient.
Under his direction, the Foundation planned and built the Bullitt Center, the world's greenest office building, which it now manages as a profitable business. In 1970, Hayes was the primary national organizer of the inaugural Earth Day, and in 1990, he expanded the celebration internationally. It is currently the world's most frequently observed secular holiday.
