Caryl Rivers received the Helen Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Professional Journalists in 2007. She is a nationally recognized author, writer, columnist, media critic, and Boston University journalism professor who has spent four decades reporting on and commenting on American life and politics.
She began her career as a Washington newspaper correspondent, covering the civil rights movement and the Kennedy presidency. Later, she wrote for US newspapers and magazines about the Vietnam debate, the women's movement, the growth of the political right, the struggles over political correctness, and the differences over race, class, and gender that have frequently convulsed the nation.
