Bryan Alexander Biography

Bryan Alexander is a well-known futurist, researcher, writer, lecturer, consultant, and teacher who focuses on how technology is transforming education. In 1997, he received his PhD in English language and literature from the University of Michigan, with a dissertation on doppelgangers in Romantic-era fiction and poetry. At Centenary College of Louisiana, he taught literature, writing, multimedia, and information technology studies. He also pioneered multi-campus multidisciplinary programs there, as well as an information literacy project. He worked at the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) from 2002 to 2014, a non-profit that helps small schools and universities better integrate digital technology. He served as co-director of a regional education and technology center, director of new technologies, and senior fellow at NITLE. During that time, Bryan assisted in the development and support of the charity, as well as the growth of peer networks, consulting, and the pursuit of a long-term research goal. Bryan Alexander Consulting, LLC was founded by him in 2013. He consults throughout higher education in the United States and worldwide through BAC. Bryan also regularly talks and publishes, with essays appearing in publications such as The Atlantic Monthly and Inside Higher Ed. He has been interviewed and featured by MSNBC, US News and World Report, National Public Radio, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, Pew Research, Campus Technology, and the Connected Learning Alliance, among others. Academia Next: The Futures of Higher Education, released by Johns Hopkins University Press in January 2020, earned an Association of Professional Futurists award. He is now working on a book called Universities on Fire: Higher Education in the Age of Climate Change (2022). Gearing Up For Learning Beyond K-12 and The New Digital Storytelling are two of his other recent works (second edition).
