Beth Noveck Biography

Beth Noveck, a lawyer by training and a techie by passion, strives to improve government data openness. Why should you pay attention to her: What can we do with our data to help our democracies? She's presently trying to design for ORGPedia, a platform for combining and displaying publicly available and crowdsourced corporate data. In 2013, her book The Networked State will be released. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and the MIT Media Lab, as well as a professor of law at New York Law School, where she founded the Institute for Information Law and Policy. She was the first Deputy Chief Technology Officer of the United States, as well as the originator and head of the White House Open Government Initiative (2009-2011). She was named a senior advisor for Open Government by UK Prime Minister David Cameron, and she was a member of the Obama-Biden transition team. Her research, advocacy, and teaching are all focused on speeding up and evaluating progress toward smarter, more collaborative, and decentralized government. Peer To Patent, the US government's first expert network; OrgPedia, the Wikipedia of businesses; Data.gov, and Challenge.gov are just a few of the initiatives she's worked on. She was named one of Fast Company magazine's "100 Most Creative People in Business" and Huffington Post's "Top Women in Technology" after graduating from Harvard University and Yale Law School. She is the co-editor of The State of Play: Law, Games, and Virtual Worlds and the author of Wiki Government: How Technology Can Make Government Better, Democracy Stronger, and Citizens More Powerful.
