Ashwin Vasan is an American physician and public health leader who served as the 44th Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from March 2022 to October 2024. He pioneered several policies focused on extending the life expectancy for New Yorkers, addressing public health inequities, and navigating the later stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Vasan holds a Bachelor’s in Economics from UCLA, a Master’s of Science in Epidemiology from Harvard, an M.D. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He completed his internal medicine education at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Vasan is an assistant professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he teaches global health and implementation science and is a primary care physician.
