Alex Webb was born in the year 1952 in San Francisco, California. During his high school years, he became interested in photography and joined the Apeiron Workshops in 1972. He studied photography at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts while majoring in history and literature at Harvard University.
In 1976, Webb became an associate member of the worldwide photographers' collaboration Magnum Photos. Webb shot throughout the US South in the mid-1970s, chronicling small-town life in black and white. He also began working in the Caribbean and Mexico, which prompted him to begin photography in color in 1978, a practice he has followed to this day.
