Alex Filippenko Biography

Alex Filippenko is a Miller Senior Fellow at the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science and a Richard & Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences (UC Berkeley). His achievements have been acknowledged by numerous significant accolades, including a share of the Gruber Cosmology Prize (2007) and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, which he shared (2015). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2009) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is one of the world's most often quoted astronomers (2015). He received the Caltech Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017. He has received the most prestigious teaching honors at UC Berkeley and has been named "Best Professor" on campus an unprecedented nine times. He was named Carnegie/CASE National Professor of the Year for doctoral institutions in 2006, and he also won the Richard H. Emmons Award for undergraduate teaching (2010). He has appeared in over 120 TV documentaries, including around 50 episodes of The Discovery Channel's "The Universe" series. He has also co-authored an award-winning astronomy textbook and created five astronomy video courses with "The Great Courses." Over 1000 public talks or other presentations have been delivered by him. He received the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization in 2004.
