Dr. Albert Yu-Min Lin is a University of California, San Diego Research Scientist and a National Geographic Society Emerging Explorer in the field of technology-enabled exploration. UC San Diego's National Geographic Engineers for Exploration Program, the Exploration Lab, the Distributed Health Labs, and the worldwide Valley of the Khans Project are among the initiatives he developed and managed. He pushes the boundaries of field-based research at the California Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at UC San Diego. Albert's study has brought him to some of the world's most isolated locations, spawned industry-changing inventions, and increased the role of the media in science. His team's use of digital media to crowdsource massive satellite data analytics (awarded 2011 the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation Academic Achievement award) has been replicated for applications ranging from emergency response to humanitarian monitoring, leading to the formation of Tomnod Inc. in California, where he served as co-Founder and Chairman of the Board. He's been asked to discuss his work on large-scale cooperation and crowd-sourced collective intelligence with the US Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Harvard Business School, and the Pentagon's Department of Defense.
