Adam Ellick Biography

Adam B. Ellick is a New York Times Senior Video Journalist who covers the world in both video and print. Ellick has traveled to more than 70 countries with a backpack and a tiny camera, frequently getting a front-row seat to historic events. In 2009, he became the first reporter to expose Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai's tale to the world in a documentary in which he spent six months filming Malala while she was still anonymous. He also handled Hugo Chavez's violent land reforms in Venezuela, investigated Russia's anti-American youth groups, road-tripped across Iran documenting ordinary Iranians' perspectives, and covered the Arab Spring protests from Egypt and Bahrain, where he was detained and struck by police while working alongside his colleague Nicholas Kristof. The Daniel Pearl Award was given to Ellick for his coverage of Pakistan in 2010. He has also received three nominations for The Livingston Award, which recognizes journalists under the age of 35, and has won consecutive Overseas Press Club prizes. Ellick spent four years as a Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia before joining The New York Times, where he spent four years reporting across Eastern Europe and Russia, including a two-month journey across Siberia. He began his career as a Pulliam Fellow at the Indianapolis Star. Ellick is a Council on Foreign Relations Term Member. He has taught journalism at New York University and in Colombia, Brazil, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Russia. He attended Ithaca College and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
