Abeba Birhane is an Ethiopian-born cognitive scientist and AI ethics researcher whose work is at the nexus of complex adaptive systems, machine learning, algorithmic bias, and critical race studies, focusing on the ethical implications of AI and its impact on marginalized communities. She holds a B.A. Psychology and a B.A in. Philosophy from The Open University, a Master of Science in Cognitive Science, and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from University College Dublin’s Complex Software Lab.
Birhane gained prominence for her work with Vinay Prabhu, auditing large-scale AI training datasets like ImageNet and MIT’s 80 Million Tiny Images, revealing racist, misogynistic, and offensive content. Their 2020 paper led to MIT voluntarily removing the 80 Million Tiny Images dataset. Her research highlights how AI amplifies biases, disproportionately harming vulnerable groups like older workers, trans people, immigrants, and children.
