Yaa Gyasi is a renowned Ghanaian-American novelist. She moved to the United States at age two with her family and was raised in Huntsville, Alabama, going on to earn a BA in English from Stanford University and an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Gyasi rose to prominence with her debut novel “Homegoing” (2016), a multigenerational saga tracing the legacy of slavery through two branches of a Ghanaian family, one in Africa and one in America. The book won the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Award, the PEN/Hemingway Award, and other honors. Her second novel, “Transcendent Kingdom” (2020), explores faith, addiction, and science through a Ghanaian immigrant family in Alabama. Her work often examines Black identity, generational trauma, and the African diaspora.
