Xiye Bastida is a Mexican-Chilean climate activist of Otomi-Toltec descent. Raised in San Pedro Tultepec, Mexico, she moved to New York City in 2015 after severe flooding, following years of drought, impacted her hometown. Her parents, both environmentalists, instilled in her the Indigenous values of reciprocity with nature.
Bastida became a leading voice in the youth climate movement, organizing the first major New York City climate strike in 2019 with Fridays for Future, mobilizing 300,000 people. She co-founded the Re-Earth Initiative in 2020, a youth-led nonprofit supporting frontline communities across 27 countries.
