About Winona LaDuke

Winona LaDuke Biography

Winona LaDuke is a well-known activist who focuses on problems related to renewable energy, food systems, and sustainable development. She is a two-time Green Party vice presidential candidate alongside Ralph Nader and resides and works on the White Earth reserve in northern Minnesota. She works with indigenous people on problems of climate change, renewable energy, and environmental justice as the program director of Honor the Earth. She also founded the White Earth Land Recovery Project, one of the biggest nonprofits based on reservations in the nation, and is a pioneer in the fields of culturally based sustainable development techniques, renewable energy, and food systems in her own community. She also keeps up her local, national, and worldwide efforts to save Indigenous flora and traditional cuisines against patenting and genetic engineering. LaDuke's leadership and dedication to the community were honored when she was elected into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2007. She was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 50 most promising young leaders in America in 1994. With the Indigo Girls, she won the Ms. Woman of the Year in 1997, the Thomas Merton Award in 1996, and the Reebok Human Rights Award in 1998, with which she launched the White Earth Land Recovery Project in part. In recognition of the group's efforts to save wild rice from patenting and genetic engineering, the White Earth Land Recovery Project received the coveted 2003 International Slow Food Award for Biodiversity. She is a Harvard and Antioch University graduate and has written extensively on environmental and Native American concerns. She formerly served on the board of Greenpeace USA, and she now serves on the boards of the Christensen Fund and the Native Lands Program of the Trust for Public Lands. She has authored five books, including the novel Last Standing Woman, Recovering the Sacred, and All Our Relations. She is well known for her work on environmental and human rights concerns.
