X Ambassadors had their start as a band called simply Ambassadors that toured alongside performers like LIGHTS. They made a music video for the album's first track, Tropisms, and self-released their debut EP, Ambassadors EP, during this period. Soon after the group's self-released debut album, Litost.
To film a video for the first track Unconsolable, which would subsequently be re-recorded, the band launched a Kickstarter campaign. The title track from the album, Litost, as well as Unconsolable from the Love Songs Drug Songs EP, were subsequently used on the soundtrack for the film The Host.
