Wynton Marsalis is a well-known proponent of American culture who is also a composer, bandleader, educator, and performer with international renown. He is the only jazz musician in history to play and write music that spans the genre's whole range, from its New Orleans beginnings through bebop and current jazz. At the age of 14, he joined the New Orleans Philharmonic. Wynton played while still in high school with the New Orleans Symphony Brass Quintet, the New Orleans Community Concert Band, the New Orleans Youth Orchestra, several jazz ensembles, and the well-known neighborhood funk band the Creators.
