Willie Smits Biography

In addition to being a qualified forester, Willie Smits holds degrees in microbiology, conservation, animal rights, wilderness engineering, and social entrepreneurship. In Borneo, he started out as a forester. He served as a team leader for the Tropenbos Kalimantan Project Indonesia, an international collaboration between the Tropenbos Foundation and the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry, in the early 1990s. Smits has labored to protect this endangered species of ape, and during that period, his work has expanded to include adjacent fields including sustainable farming, reforestation, and remote forest monitoring. He travels extensively to raise awareness of the problems relating to Borneo's deforestation and the situation of the orangutan. He also demonstrates how the significant harm being done to the orangutan and its ecosystem has been able to be reversed on a very modest scale. He rose to the position of senior counselor to Indonesia's Ministry of Forests.
