Walter Hood Biography

Walter Hood is Professor and former Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of California Berkeley, as well as the founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, California. Hood founded Hood Design Studio in 1992. Hood's work ranges from neighborhood network-based jobs, such as Splash Pad Park, a changed over traffic island near Interstate 580 in Oakland, California, to large-scale garden ideas, such as the reasoning for the new M. H. Herzog and de Meuron designed the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Hood's innovative open spaces are noted for their grip on the embodiment of urban circumstances, as well as their links to urban regeneration and local revitalization. Hood's distributed monographs Urban Diaries and Blues and Jazz Landscape Improvisations represent his approach to dealing with the structure of urban scenes. He is currently structuring the scene for the Autry National Center Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, planning and archeological nursery inside the setting of the South Lawn Project at the University of Virginia, and constructing a lot of landmarks and markers for a six-mile waterfront trail in Oakland CA. In 1996, these works were awarded an ASLA Research grant. Macon Memories is recognized for its paper "Sites of Memory: Perspectives on Architecture and Race."
