Vera Farmiga, an American performer, won an Academy Award for outstanding performance in a supporting role opposite George Clooney in the movie Up in the Air (2009). Farmiga and her Ukrainian guardians had their second of seven children in New Jersey. She initially dreamed of being an optometrist but changed her mind and thought about studying acting at Syracuse University's School of Performing Arts. She made her Broadway debut in the play Taking Sides as an understudy in 1996, launching her professional acting career. Her theatre performances include Second-Hand Smoke, The Tempest, The Glass Menagerie, and Hamlet (1997). She made her TV debut at the same time as the female lead in Fox's Roar opposite a then-unknown Heath Ledger. Farmiga made her big-screen debut in the 1998 film Return to Paradise. She later portrayed the girlfriends of actors Richard Gere in Autumn in New York (2000) and Christopher Walken in the Opportunist (2000). (2000). In the 2004 film Down to the Bone, she portrayed a mother who struggles to maintain her life and marriage while hiding her long-term heroin use. For this role, she received Best Actress nominations from the Sundance Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
