Uğur Şahin is a German oncologist, immunologist, and the CEO of BioNTech, renowned for co-developing one of the first major vaccines against COVID-19. Born in Turkey and raised in Germany from the age of four, Şahin's academic journey began at the University of Cologne, where he completed his doctoral thesis in cancer immunotherapy.
After years of contributing to academia as an oncohematology physician and researcher at various university hospitals, Şahin founded a research group at the University of Mainz in 2000 and later became a professor of experimental oncology. In 2001, alongside his spouse Özlem Türeci and mentor Christoph Huber, he co-founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals, which developed significant cancer therapies, and BioNTech in 2008, focusing initially on mRNA technology for cancer before pivoting to vaccine development for COVID-19.
