American figure skater Tonya Maxene Harding later turned to boxing as a profession after her skating career came to an end. Harding started moving up the competitive skating ladder in the middle of the 1980s. In 1986, she finished sixth in the U.S. Fifth place in 1987 and 1988, and third in 1989 at the figure skating championships.
She was a strong free skater and frequently placed lower in the required figures. She performed the triple axel once more at the 1991 World Championships, becoming the first American woman to do it at a competition abroad.
