Thornton was born in the Texas town of College Station. She made her television acting debut in the Fox comedy Quintuplets' pilot episode. She went on to star in films such as 8 Simple Rules, American Dreams, The O.C., Desperate Housewives, That's So Raven, Jericho, Wizards of Waverly Place, and Hannah Montana.
She first appeared as Tawni Hart on the Disney Channel Original Series Sonny with a Chance in 2009, and then in the Disney Channel Original Movie Hatching Pete in 2010. Sonny With a Chance concluded on January 2, 2011, and was replaced by So Random!, which debuted on June 5, 2011, and starred Thornton.
