Thi Bui arrived in the United States in 1978 as part of the boat people wave of refugees from Southeast Asia. Thi Bui was born in Vietnam three months before the conclusion of the Vietnam War.
Her first graphic memoir, The Best We Could Do, was chosen as UCLA's 2017 Common Book and appeared on several best-of lists, including Bill Gates' top five. The award-winning picture book A Different Pond by the poet Bao Phi was also illustrated by Bui. She is presently doing research for a graphic nonfiction piece about Vietnam's climate change.
