I met Matt Berninger, the lead vocalist of The National, on New Year's Eve 2004 at a party in Brooklyn. He appeared to have been holed up at home for days, lost in his books and videos, just like he had the last several times I had seen him.
Don't get too into your band, he advised an old buddy who asked him how it felt to have left behind the world of a regular job. You'll be miserable but content and won't want to do anything else again. You only need to be aware of The National's sacrifice of decent employment for this. You could, however, desire more.
