According to legend, George Smitty Smith, Sonny Edward Bivins, and Blue Winfred Lovett, When they were young vocalists in Jersey City, New Jersey, Kenneth Kelly, and Richard Taylor began to refer to themselves as the Manhattans because they would look over the Hudson River at the Manhattan skyline and daydream of making it big. Although the narrative is charming, it is regrettably untrue. The quintet's name comes from a whisky, vermouth, and bitters-based drink called the Manhattan. Even yet, the term implied class, which the Manhattans have embodied throughout their lengthy existence. First tenor Bivins and baritone vocalist Taylor met while serving in the Air Force in Germany in the late 1950s; Bivins describes the group's beautiful style as progressive doo-wop. In 1960, Bivins Lovett and Smith founded the Dulcets after being let off. The Dulcet's released Pork Chops on the Sue Label in 1961. The Manhattans were created in 1963 with the inclusion of Kelly and Taylor. The Manhattans started recording in 1963 but didn't become well-known until they successfully defied the disco trend with a string of love songs for Columbia Records in the middle of the 1970s. Between 1973 and 1978, they had eight singles in the R&B Top 10, with the theme "Kiss And Said Goodbye" reaching No. 1 on both the R&B and Pop Charts in 1976 and finishing in the top five in both England and Australia. Shining Star reached No. 5 on the Pop Charts and remained there for 14 weeks.
