Ted Mitchell, a former college president, and prominent federal policymaker took office as the American Council on Education's (ACE) president on September 1. Mitchell brings to ACE a wealth of expertise and achievements from the higher education field and a longstanding commitment to assisting more students in enrolling in and completing their degrees at postsecondary institutions.
He has held positions as trustee of a significant research institution, senior public university administrator, and president of a private liberal arts college. From 1999 through 2005, Mitchell served as Occidental College's president. From 2014 until January 2017, he oversaw postsecondary education policy and initiatives as the secretary of education for the United States, reporting to the secretary of education.
