Her schooling was sporadic and haphazard after being taught to read by an older brother since she spent most of her days working in her father's junkyard or stewing herbs for her mother. The first time she stepped inside a classroom, she was seventeen. She continued her study after that initial experience for ten years, obtaining a Gates Cambridge Scholarship after graduating with honors from Brigham Young University in 2008. In 2009, Trinity College in Cambridge gave her an MPhil; in 2014, she was given a Ph.D. in history. She is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School Shorenstein Center, working on media and political polarization-related topics.
