Tara Roberts is an acclaimed American journalist, storyteller, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, and author known for her groundbreaking work documenting slave shipwrecks and reframing Black history. A Mount Holyoke College graduate with a self-designed major in communications studies, she built a career as an editor at magazines like Essence, Ebony, CosmoGirl, and Heart & Soul.

In 2016, inspired by a photo of Black scuba divers at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, Roberts joined Diving With a Purpose, a group searching for shipwrecks from the transatlantic slave trade.

She learned to dive, traveled globally, and chronicled their efforts through the award-winning National Geographic podcast “Into the Depths” (2022), becoming the first Black woman to appear on the magazine's cover and earning the 2022 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year award.

Her 2025 memoir, “Written in the Waters: A Memoir of History, Home, and Belonging,” blends personal reflection, family history, and the ongoing impact of slavery.
