The youngest of seven children, Taissa Farmiga, is also the younger sister of Vera Farmiga, who is 21 years her senior. In contrast to her sister, Taissa showed no interest in becoming a performer. She persuaded Taissa to participate in Vera's Higher Ground, her feature film debut (2011).
Vera had to find an accurate likeness for the younger version of her character to play the lead in the movie. Farmiga, who was 15 years old and had just left a school performance, had never before performed on stage. She received fantastic reviews for the movie, which was shown at the Sundance film festival.
