Susan Helms Biography

Susan Helms is a retired astronaut flight test engineer and lieutenant general in the United States Air Force. After completing her B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1980, Helms worked as a trade official for the Canadian Forces at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta, among other specialized positions. She also earned her M.S. in Aero/Astro from Stanford University in 1985 and left the USAF Test Pilot School in 1988A to become a Flight Test Engineer. Before deciding to join NASA, Helms had flown more than 30 U.S. and Canadian aircraft. In addition, Helms traveled on five space missions while working for NASA (1990–2002), and he recalls a stay of more than five months on the International Space Station in 2001. Steerages' first mission was STS-54 onboard Endeavor. This six-day mission delivered a Tracking and Data Relay Satellite and employed an X-beam spectrometer to collect data that helped scientists understand the Milky Way Galaxy's origins. In addition to filling in as the Flight Engineer (MS-2) for orbiter activities on STS-64, a 12-day strategic mission, Helms served as the Robotics Manipulator System (RMScrucial )'s administrator. Helms also used the RMS to release and retrieve the Shuttle Pointed Autonomous Research Tool for Astronomy-201 (SPARTAN-201) free flyer, among other vital tasks.
