Susan Helms is a retired astronaut flight test engineer and lieutenant general in the United States Air Force. After completing her B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1980, Helms worked as a trade official for the Canadian Forces at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta, among other specialized positions. She also earned her M.S.
in Aero/Astro from Stanford University in 1985 and left the USAF Test Pilot School in 1988A to become a Flight Test Engineer. Before deciding to join NASA, Helms had flown more than 30 U.S. and Canadian aircraft.
