Siddharth Kara Biography

Siddharth Kara is a writer, scriptwriter, researcher, and protester on issues of the modern slavery, child labour, and human rights. He teaches at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the Harvard School of Public Health, as well as the University of California, Berkeley. Kara has published 3 books as well as numerous articles and reports on modern slavery and child labour. Sex Trafficking: Inside the Business of Modern Slavery, his 1st book, was a co-winner of Yale University's prestigious Frederick Douglass Award (2010) for the best non-fiction book on enslavement. Kara has since evolved the book into a Hollywood feature film titled Trafficked. Bonded Labor: Tackling the System of Slavery in South Asia, Kara's second book, was published in October 2012. Bonded Labor is the first comprehensive overview of the South Asian debt bondage system, just as Sex Trafficking was the first comprehensive overview of the global sex trafficking industry. Kara's third book, Modern Slavery: A Global Perspective, is her final work on enslavement and was released in October 2017 at the U.N. The book provides a fundamental overview of the major expressions of slavery throughout history. Kara has traveled to more than 50 countries across 6 continents to study modern-day slavery, individually documenting the incidents of the several thousand former and present slaves of varieties, having witnessed firsthand the sale of living beings into slavery, and having to face some of those who smuggled and abused them since first encountering human trafficking in a Bosnian refugee camp in the 1990s. Kara has diligently mapped worldwide human trafficking systems, investigated the dangerous underground of smuggled sex slaves, delved into the internal workings of criminal organizations that traffic in human organs, and traced supply chains of innumerable commodities tainted by slavery and child labor. Kara has received funds from Humanity United, the C&A Establishment, and Google organization in addition to self-funding the majority of his studies. Kara presently counsels the U.N, the International Labor Organization, the United States Government, and a number of other governments on civil rights policy. Kara has given testimony about his studies before the United States Congress as well as several foreign legislatures. Kara has also showed up on BBC, CNN, CNBC, the Guardia, National Geographic, and in a number of documentary films as a professional on modern day slavery. Kara worked previously as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch before starting his funding and Merger and acquisitions consultancy firm.
